Upgrade Your xMac mini Server to Thunderbolt 2 Technology

Sonnet designed the xMac mini Server (part number XMAC-MS-A) to be easily upgraded to 20Gbps Thunderbolt 2, even though at the time, the Mac mini was only equipped with 10Gbps Thunderbolt technology. With the announcement of the Late 2014 Mac mini with Thunderbolt 2 technology, we are pleased to make the upgrade card available. Simply replace the existing Thunderbolt interface board with the upgrade board, and your xMac mini Server will support the new Mac mini’s Thunderbolt 2 interface at full speed. Planning to replace your Mac mini with a new one in the future, but want to update your xMac mini Server now? A Thunderbolt 2-upgraded xMac mini Server works perfectly with your existing Mac mini.

Surprise!

Due to fluctuating parts availability in 2014, Sonnet shipped some xMac mini Servers with a Thunderbolt 2 interface. Here is how to find out whether or not your xMac mini Server already has a Thunderbolt 2 board installed, or to confirm that it may be upgraded.

  1. Locate the product serial number. The easiest place to find it is on the product package. If you purchased the product from a Sonnet reseller, its serial number may have been listed on the invoice. Alternately, you may find the serial number label on the bottom of the xMac mini Server, close to the back edge near the cable passthrough opening.

  2. Confirm you have an upgradable xMac mini Server (part number XMAC-MS-A) or one with a Thunderbolt 2 board already installed:

xMac mini Servers with serial numbers starting with B01031… and D01031… shipped from Sonnet with Thunderbolt 2.

xMac mini Servers with serial numbers starting with A01031… and C01031… shipped from Sonnet with 10Gbps Thunderbolt and may be upgraded to Thunderbolt 2 with BRDUPGRTB2-XM.

xMac mini Servers with serial numbers that do not match those listed here are NOT upgradeable.
